Designing wayfinding materials for patients and visitors

The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust has undergone major changes; buildings have been added or demolished and wards and departments amalgamated or relocated. Keeping visitors and patients up-to-date with where they need to be is a priority. The Hospital has always tried to help visitors find their way around by mailing maps to patients with appointment letters and having maps available in key locations.
We had previously created maps for both the RBH and Battle hospital sites. With the impending closure of the latter, and the incorporating of its services into the main RBH site, a fuller and more flexible design was needed to allow frequent changes.
When the latest building was opened, we redesigned the Hospital's site map. We then incorporated this into a more comprehensive leaflet.
