Improving wayfinding information at the Royal Berkshire Hospital

Tasks included

What was needed

The hospital has recently undergone major changes; new buildings have been added and wards and departments have been shuffled around constantly. Lift directories had been installed in new buildings, but none were produced for existing buildings. We were asked to supply 'temporary' signs which had to be easy and inexpensive to update for lifts in four of the five hospital blocks. These signs also had to fit with those in the new buildings, and use the hospital's existing colour-coding system.

Our approach

We visited the site to assess existing lift signs, asking visitors and patients for informal comments. We produced two alternative designs which matched RNIB recommendations regarding contrast, legibility, typeface choice etc., and made another site visit, asking passers-by for feedback. We also suggested that the construction of these temporary signs allow for a changeable insert. The signs had to be vandal-proof, easy to update and compensate for glare.

Our solution

The final designs were united as a set by using grey backgrounds. The hospital 'block' colours were used sparingly to highlight the block name, and some signs incorporated 'you are here' maps to aid orientation.
