Designing wayfinding materials for patients and visitors

Royal Berkshire Hospital is a complex site comprised of several connected 'blocks', with floor levels that are not necessarily the same across the hospital site. When the latest block was completed, the Hospital asked us to update and redesign their large user-oriented site plans. These would be installed near entrances as well as at key areas in Hospital buildings.
We worked closely with staff to create an up-to-date directory listing all wards and services, and a simpler yet more accurate map.
The list and the maps reflected the Hospital's colour coding system, as well as the style used for other wayfinding devices such as the site directories.
The final maps, as with the site directories, used colour with restraint to articulate the list of wards and services. The actual site plan was the focal point of the layout and the effect was a less cluttered and more appealing layout. Later on, we used the redesigned maps in the Hospital's new map leaflets.
