Our solution (continued)

We brought three main skills to this project:

• analysis of IMIS' existing assessment procedure and then mapping the criteria for membership across to SFIA. This enabled us to find the equivalent levels and types of skill in SFIA.
• designing and documenting a new assessment procedure based on SFIA, which involved creating a scoring system to mark the applicant's achievements and then writing a set of assessment guidelines for IMIS staff.
• building and testing a simple but 'intelligent' on-line version of this assessment procedure, which scored the applicant's information and then presented them with an instant result. This involved designing user-friendly web page templates and writing the scripts to tie the process together.

Ongoing work

IMIS have reported the success of the on-line assessment, with applications for membership increasing dramatically.

At the end of March 2006 we relaunched the site after its third redesign and restructure, in order to keeping the site looking up-to-date and to meet the ever-changing needs of the IMIS membership and staff.

The new site has password-restricted areas for members and has a secure link directly to the IMIS membership database, allowing members to update their own personal details.

Since the original build we have added many more facilities, including a student membership application and application for IMIS examinations, as well as discussion forums and an opinion poll for members.

Future plans include a facility for on-line membership subscription renewal and other online facilities for IMIS members which will utilise the link with the membership database. As well as making life easier for members this will also save administration time for IMIS staff.
