What was needed

A new approach to environmental regulation throughout Europe -- integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC) -- created many new issues for UK regulator the Environment Agency and also for the businesses and organisations regulated by the new rules. Environment Agency asked us to help with, first, a system to manage the huge amount of documentation which had to be created and, second, to find some way of helping applicants supply the right information with their applications.

Our approach

We designed and developed a structure and visual design for IPPC documentation and implemented it using Adobe's FrameMaker document creation software. The system allows the Agency to tailor core documents to the needs of specific industrial sectors, to manage versions/editions, and to output with no specialist knowledge to both PDF and web-format document 'nets'.
