Working alongside QCA and their authors, a document type definition (DTD) needed to be agreed to set a single structure for all subject units. A template design for the PDF and print versions could then be created. This allowed a working methodology to be established early in the project, enforcing consistency and reducing errors. COI's typesetters would need training. Authors and proofreaders would need an understanding of the process enabling everyone to work as a team. Single structured files would be exported to print, XML, MS Word and PDF formats.
We analysed and designed a single structure to accommodate all the subject units. A DTD and print view template were made and tested using `Framemaker+SGML'. We ran training days for COI's typesetters and the relevant people in the team. Once production of the printed documents was signed off, PDF and MS Word files were generated to be included for download on the internet. The files were also exported as XML then parsed into an existing database which drives the Standards web site. Future units and revisions can be updated or revised from existing files and processed in the same way.
